We have the auteur sitcom: “Louie,” “Maron,” and now “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” made by established comedians who trust their audiences and don’t pander to them sketch shows like “Key & Peele,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and “Broad City,” which do the same and dramatic comedies like “High Maintenance,” “Transparent,” and “Orange Is the New Black.” Late night is changing, but so is what we need and want from late night some of what it once gave us comes from elsewhere. But there’s smart late-night fare like “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” and beyond that, with the broadening of platforms and formats, as well as the increasing trust that venues like HBO and newer competitors put in artists and directors, there’s more bold and interesting comedy than ever before. “No celebrities, no parodies, no pranks, no mash-ups or hashtag wars.” He added, “And shove your lip-synching up your ass.” (O’Brien later tweeted a rebuke: “I wish one of my writers would focus on making my show funnier instead of tweeting stupid things about the state of late night comedy.”)ĭu Bouchet was right: these trends are lightweight, or worse, and if they were all we had comedically, we’d be in trouble, especially in light of the departures of Jon Stewart, David Letterman, and the buffoon version of Stephen Colbert.

In April, the “Conan” writer and standup veteran Andrés du Bouchet, in a series of tweets that have since been deleted, articulated a feeling shared by many: that late-night TV entertainment, a cornerstone of the comedy world and long the domain of smart misfits, had become “Prom King Comedy,” ruled by the “popular kids”: presumably, hosts like Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel and the movie stars and pop singers they deploy in comedy bits. It’s a huge hit on TV and online: in a scenario that you could see either as a phenomenal success or as the nadir of pop culture, a clip featuring Anne Hathaway as Miley Cyrus, licking a sparkly mallet, swinging on a wrecking ball, looking uncomfortably badass, and giving the finger to Emily Blunt, has been viewed more than ten million times on YouTube.
Now “Lip Sync Battle” is a stand-alone half-hour show on the Spike TV network, produced by Krasinski and Merchant-a venture that Jim Halpert and the Oggmonster might not have imagined. People in living rooms and cubicles everywhere had been reacting the same way ever since “Lip Sync Battle,” a sketch conceived of by Fallon’s guest John Krasinski, with Stephen Merchant and Emily Blunt, débuted on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Fallon brought it to the “Tonight Show,” where it continued to be a hit, generating viral videos of Emma Stone, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and others.
